Cleaning Up of Contaminated Soils by Using Microbial Remediation: A Review and Challenges to the Weaknesses Abstract The use of microbial bioremediation in recovering polluted soils is not a new technology based on many review reports and studies on its efficiencies and on how to increase the effectiveness. In this short paper, we reviewed the advantages and weaknesses of microbial remediation in cleaning up the polluted ecosystems. Based on the identified weaknesses/disadvantages or incompleteness of the microbial remediation by Sharma and Reddy (2004), future studies should focus on how to increase the effectiveness of the bioremediation technology that should further reduce environmental stress on the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Overall, strategies in the future studies for improving the microbial remediation are discussed. Keywords: Microorganisms; Remediation; Microbes Introduction to Bioremediation Cleaning up of chemical poll...

Biomedical Science and Research Journals | Acupuncture on Neiguan spot: A promising therapeutic approach for atrial fibrillation by modulating autonomic nerves?

Acupuncture on Neiguan spot: A promising therapeutic approach for atrial fibrillation by modulating autonomic nerves? Opinion Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most common arrhythmias with high morbidity and mortality [ 2 ]. AF is frequently associated with heart diseases, autonomous nerve imbalance, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, inflammation, oxidative stress, and with a high prevalence in the elderly. Previous clinical and experimental researches have confirmed that cardiac autonomic imbalance plays a predominant role in the initiation and maintenance of AF [ 2 - 4 ]. In traditional Chinese medicine, Neiguan acupuncture has been used to treat cardiac arrhythmia and ischemia [ 5 ]. Multiple clinical evidences have demonstrated that Neiguan-acupuncture may be an effective approach for AF patients who underwent electrical cardioversion to restore sinus rhythm. The study by Federico Lombardi and his group [ 6 ] indicated that acupuncture of Neiguan has...

Biomedical Science and Research Journals | ATP1A3 Gene Mutation in Rapid Onset Dystonia Parkinsonism (RDP) And Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood (AHC) Syndromes

ATP1A3 Gene Mutation in Rapid Onset Dystonia Parkinsonism (RDP) And Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood (AHC) Syndromes Mini Review Rapid onset Dystonia Parkinsonism (RDP) syndrome belongs to the dystonia-parkinsonism syndromes group. The clinical symptoms usually develop during some minutes to some weeks and then will go on a stable manner. The symptoms are related to parkinsonisms and dystonia. Sometimes symptoms of dystonia would continue for years until parkinsonisms related symptoms appear. Sometimes seizures and some psychiatric symptoms would appear among other symptoms, but such findings are rare. Risus sardonicus, slurred speech, dysphasia and fixed smile can be seen in this syndrome. The symptoms related to parkinsonism would not give any response to levodopa treatment. Physical and emotional stresses can trigger the appearance of symptoms which the usual onset of symptoms appearance would be among adolescents and young adults [ 1 - 3 ]. Mutation in ATP1A3 gene which ...

Biomedical Science and Research Journals | Prevalence of major skin diseases of cattle in and around Hawassa, Southern Ethiopia

Prevalence of major skin diseases of cattle in and around Hawassa, Southern Ethiopia Abstract A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence of major skin diseases of cattle in and around Hawassa from November 2011 to April 2012. Of the total 384 cattle examined, 66 (17.27%) were clinically infected with different skin diseases of various etiologic origin. The most commonly encountered skin diseases were: dermatophytosis (8.32%), ascariasis (3.13%), pediculosis (2.60%), lumpy skin disease (1.62%) and dermatophilosis (1.56%). No significant differences (P>0.05) were observed among age, breed and managemental groups in relation to the prevalence of dermatophilosis and lumpy skin disease infection rates whereas significantly (P<0.05) higher cases of dermatophytosis and pediculosis were recorded in animals less than two years of age. In dermatophytosis and pediculosis cases, no significant difference (P>0.05) was seen between the sex ...

Biomedical Science and Research Journals | Endometrial Sampling for Endometrial Cancer: Still the Gold Standard?

Image
Endometrial Sampling for Endometrial Cancer: Still the Gold Standard? Endometrial Cancer (EC) Is the most common gynaecological malignancy affecting women in developed countries and the second most common gynaecological malignancy world-wide, due to the higher rates of cervical cancer in the developing world [ 1 ]. The incidence of EC is steadily increasing, largely owing to an ageing population and escalating rates of obesity [ 2 ]. According to International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), EC is a major differential diagnosis of AUB in the reproductive women [ 3 ]. Despite the frequency of this disease, awareness amongst the general population is low and EC research is somewhat underfunded relative to its societal burden [ 4 ]. In the past, multiple attempts to evaluate the histological grade preoperatively were without significant success [ 5 , 6 ]. Dilation and curettage (D&C) were once the gold standard for endometria sampling and routinely u...

Introduction Porcelain Veneers are widely used nowadays to recreate the natural cosmetic appearance of teeth. It also provides strength and resilience in relevance to natural tooth enamel. Therefore, to enhance the clinical predictability of Porcelain veneers, Patients are commonly advised to follow routine oral health care recommendations by the Dental Professionals [1]. Overview Maintenance of Porcelain veneers doesn’t require any special oral health care. It’s few clinical tips that are essential key to sustain veneers for a long time [2]. Oral hygiene Practices Routine good oral hygiene practices are commonly advised by the dental professionals. Patients should treat veneers in the same manner likewise natural teeth. Routine oral hygiene practices include brushing (two minutes, twice daily) with proper technique, flossing and rinsing after meals with an antiseptic mouthwash [3].
