Biomedical Science & Research Journals | Doctor Armando Alonso Álvarez: A Unique and Unrepeatable Rorscharchista

Image
First of all, I want to thank the teacher, Master of Science, Miriam González Llaneza, who invited me to evoke the memory of Dr. Armando Alonso Álvarez, (1946-2017) whose name honors this Rorschachian event par excellence. I would like to begin my presentation with one of the anthological phrases of Professor Alonso Álvarez: «an adequate diagnosis of personality [shows] the way to offer the best alternative of help. Armando Alonso Álvarez, Ph. D., assistant professor of the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Havana, started, from three years ago, to the infinite space to meet with the Universal Spirit; leitmotiv in the poetic-literary and journalistic work of the Apostle, an ethical reference that will guide his steps in the exercise of pre and postgraduate higher teaching, especially in the teaching of Rorschach Psychodiagnosis; discipline excluded from the curricular design of the Psychology career in the 70s of the last century and resurrected by the also honorary pres...

Biomedical Science & Research Journals | Prevalence of additional canals in maxillary first molar in a Nepalese population: A Clinical Study

Image
Background and aims: There is a wide range of variations in the literature with respect to frequency of occurrence of the number of canals in each root, the number of roots and incidence of fusion. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of additional canals in permanent maxillary first molar in the Nepalese Population. Methods: This was a descriptive study in which maxillary first permanent molars (n-201) of Nepalese population were examined using in vivo technique. Radio-graphs were taken. Access opening was done and gentle troughing of the pulpal floor was done, to look for additional canal. Results: A total of 201 patients were treated. Of these, additional canals in me-siobuccal root was found in 34.1% of the cases and in distobuccal and palatal root, the additional canals were found in 0.49% of the cases. Conclusions: Complete knowledge of the internal anatomy and anatomic variation of root canal system is crucial for the success of the root canal ...

Biomedical Science & Research Journals | Individual Approach to Hormone Replacement Therapy – A Computer Assisted Method of Assessment of the Minimal Useful Dose

Image
Estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) was primarily used to treat vasomotor symptoms, it had been increasingly viewed as a way to prevent chronic diseases of aging, including coronary heart disease (CHD), cognitive impairment and osteoporosis [ 1 - 3 ]. Osteoporosis leads to bone fractures. Death rate due to osteoporosis is higher than the mortality rate attributed to breast and endometrial cancer combined. Estrogens are considered the gold standard in assessing the efficacy of various medications in osteoporosis treatment [ 1 , 2 ]. At least 40% of postmenopausal women in the United States were using ERT before the publication of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) report, which addressed the risks and benefits of ERT [ 1 , 4 ]. WHI trials addressed the most commonly used hormone formulations at the time in the United States -- conjugated equine estrogen (CEE) plus medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA). Findings from these trials have been extensively published during the past decades [ ...

Biomedical Science & Research Journals | Use of Indigenous Knowledge to Adapt with Climate Change: A Case Study in An Giang Province, in the Mekong Delta, Viet Nam

Image
This research was carried out to systematize and assess the appropriateness of farmer’s indigenous knowledge and their adaptive capacity with floods. The research aimed at providing scientific foundation for proposing solutions to conserve and enhance the effectiveness of valuable indigenous knowledge in reducing vulnerability of people living in flooded areas. The results showed that local people are using several effective indigenous knowledge for coping with floods. However, the valuable indigenous knowledge has not recorded yet, nor documented in written materials for sharing to young generation and communities. Besides, some indigenous practices are not suitable in practice which required reevaluation for current flood adaptation strategies. The research suggested some solutions to conserve the most valuable indigenous knowledge for pro-active adaptation of local people in changing climate. Biomedical Science & Research Journals | Is Brain Aging Retreating to an Infant Brain?

Image
Brain aging considered in its normality that is, in the absence of obvious incapacities to independently perform common daily activities across the different human domains (sensorimotor, cognition, emotional, behavioural tasks), can be defined as a time related biological and psychological process that mainly involve the speed employed to achieve a specific task or total amount of operations that a single subject can simultaneously perform in a given period of time in comparison to younger ages. In this context then, normal brain aging capacities do not look like so dissimilar from the characteristic features of the brain capacities during infancy. Both periods of life, elderly (>75 years) and infancy (0- 24 months after full-term birth), are normally characterized by neurobiological changes that have, respectively, a forward and a backward impact on the rest of the lifespan. While there are different possible overlapping characteristic in terms of global performance between e...

Biomedical Science & Research Journals | Cost-Benefit Analysis: Hemopatch® Vs Standard of Care in The Incidence of Postoperative Pancreatic Fistula in a Observational Study

Image
Objective: To determine the efficacy and the impact on postoperative morbidity, mortality, and direct hospitalization costs of using the hemostatic-sealant Hemopatch® in patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy. Method: A retrospective observational data review (26 consecutive pancreaticoduodenectomies) from July 2015 to October 2016 using the same surgical technique, 13 procedures reinforcing the duct-to-mucosa pancreaticojejunostomy with Hemopatch® and 13 procedures without Hemopatch® at Miguel Servet University Hospital, Zaragoza, Spain. Both groups were statistically homogenous. Demographic data and rates of postoperative complications were collected. To extrapolate the average cost for pancreaticoduodenectomy treatment in a larger population with a normal distribution, a Monte Carlo simulation was run with a 1,000-procedure scenario. Results: Results of the Monte Carlo simulation determined: the incidence of postoperative pancreatic fistula in the Hemopatch® ...

Biomedical Science & Research Journals | Aging: Basic Concept

Image
Today, people are living longer than ever before due to advances in education, technology, medicine, food distribution, and sanitary conditions. So, nowadays, it is not unusual to meet people who are in their 70s, 80s, 90s, and some who are close to 100 years old. However, “adding the years to life,” does not mean that we are also able to “add more life to the extra years.” In other words, living longer does not always mean we will also have better or a good quality of life in later years. Some older adults in late life are healthy and independent and are still very involved in their family and community lives. Then again, it is not unusual to see older persons who can get very ill and are not able to get themselves out of bed. Aging is a lifelong process of growing up and growing old. It begins at conception and ends with death. So, in this sense, we are all aging from the time of birth. In our younger years, aging is called by other names. For example, in our infant years, we ca...

Biomedical Science & Research Journals | Penis Problems

Image
Doctors will boast that their patients are not shy and tell them everything but that is not how it is. Patients, especially men, are a hindrance to themselves. Erectile dysfunction or the more embarrassing bent knob of Peyronie’s is something most men fear to admit. Even when they do summon the courage to talk to the doctor the best they can do is euphemise. This tells the doctor that the problem is more than physical, it is also psychological. Treat with care. The patient will be referred to a urologist. The penis is unique. Nowhere else on the male is there anything similar and, in the female, there is no equivalent and yet the failure of this inflatable organ shares medical problems with other organs. Explain to the patient that the penis is a balloon that inflates with blood and he may begin to understand. If the blood cannot flow into the penis, it will not expand. The blockage can be similar to blockages that can occur elsewhere in the body and these are issue in which a v...
