Biomedical Science and Research Journals | Delivering Health and Care in the Digital Era depends on Forging New Partnerships

Delivering Health and Care in the Digital Era depends on Forging New Partnerships Opinion “Blue sky thinking” is a perfect description for digital health: the potential is clear, the space vast and wide open. However, still countless digital health initiatives are underway around the world without overarching vision or coordinating mechanisms. This piecemeal approach makes it difficult to scale effective solutions and realize the full potential of digital in health systems. That would require new partnerships to be forged and digital technology to become integral part of every health system [1]. The Broadband Commission led by ITU and UNESCO advocates for the transformational impact of broadband technologies for development [2]. Its working group on digital health has synthesized best practices for countries to realize the potential of digital technology in health and care. The group’s first two reports laid the groundwork by explaining the need for government leadership and inte...

Biomedical Science and Research Journals | Lingual Nerve Microsurgical Repair: A Case Report and Literature Review

Image
Lingual Nerve Microsurgical Repair: A Case Report and Literature Review Introduction Injury to the lingual nerve (LN), a peripheral branch of the trigeminal nerve, can result from a wide variety of oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures. The lingual nerve, along with the inferior alveolar nerve, is one of the most commonly injured nerves during oral surgery. Numerous procedures are thought to cause lingual nerve damage, including third molar extraction, tumour excision, salivary gland excision, dental implant placement, laryngoscopy and general dental manipulation, such as local anaesthesia injection [1]. The lingual nerve supplies sensation to the anterior two-thirds of the tongue, the floor of the oral cavity, oral gingivae and sublingual gland, carries nerve fibers from the chorda tympani nerve, a branch of the facial nerve, which supplies taste and autonomics to the same area [2]. Even though the spontaneous nerve recovery rates within 6 months of damage are high [3], a s...

Biomedical Science and Research Journals | Preventing Progression to Senile Dementia in Community-Dwelling Citizens of a Small Japanese Village

Preventing Progression to Senile Dementia in Community-Dwelling Citizens of a Small Japanese Village Abstract Objectives:  Dementia is a progressive and neurodegenerative disorder of the brain and associated mental processes. The objective of this pilot study was to evaluate the benefits of personalized music interventions (PMI) on managing behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) on a geriatric dementia unit (GDU). Methods:  A pilot exploratory descriptive study was conducted using PMI delivered via directional parabolic speakers in four patients on a GDU. Each PMI session was 90 minutes total in duration, separated into 30-minute intervals of pre-intervention, intervention, and post-intervention administered twice weekly for a total of four weeks. The number of BPSD exhibited during each PMI session was assessed. In addition, SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) and CBA (cost-benefit analysis) were undertaken. Results:  The sample...

Biomedical Science and Research Journals | Clinical Significance of Urinary Tract Infection among Newborns with Hyperbilirubinemia

Clinical Significance of Urinary Tract Infection among Newborns with Hyperbilirubinemia Abstract Aim : Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common infection in neonates and can presents with unexplained neonatal jaundice and hyperbilirubinemia. We aimed to assess the significance of such symptoms in neonates with UTI. Materials and Methods : A retrospective study newborn including 102 neonates whose clinical and biological data were collected from medical records. UTI was defined as positive urine culture (any growth in suprapubic aspiration, >10,000 by urethral catheterization or >10,000 in bag collection of a single organism) associated with pyuria and bacteriuria. Data were analyzed with Stata 12.0. Results : We included 102 neonates with a mean age of 9.5±8 days (extremes 0 - 29 days) and sex ratio of 1.83. Prevalence of UTI was 36.3 % (respectively 38.9 % of boys and 34.5 % of girls). Jaundice and hyperbilirubinemia were detected respectively in 95.2% and 53.3% of newbor...

Biomedical Science and Research Journals | Molecular Characterization of Multi Drug Resistance Escherichia coli isolated among Diabetes Mellitus Patients in Dongla State, Sudan

Molecular Characterization of Multi Drug Resistance  Escherichia coli  isolated among Diabetes Mellitus Patients in Dongla State, Sudan Abstract Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by Escherichia coli have become a significant worldwide public health concern and is a common infectious disease in which level of antimicrobial resistance are alarming worldwide. Methods: Urine samples were collected form Diabetic patients clinically diagnosed by having UTI, during the period from November 2019 to April 2020 at diabetic center in Dongla, Antibiotic susceptibility tests were performed by Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion and B-lactamases genes were detected used PCR. Results: A total of 120 E. coli were Isolated from DM with UTI. All the isolated were shown to be resistant to Cefpodoxime (100%). The most efficient antibiotics were Colistin and imipenem (99.2% and 88.3 respectively as susceptibility rate) followed by Gentamycin (70%). High resistance rates were observe...

Biomedical Science and Research Journals | Mobile Apps and Memes in the Era of COVID-19 Pandemic; Could this Make Quarantine More Acceptable?

Mobile Apps and Memes in the Era of COVID-19 Pandemic; Could this Make Quarantine More Acceptable? Short Communication Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic forces the entire world countries to impose a curfew and closes most of the social organizations; that creates a lot of leisure time and the increasing need to fill this space inside the home.
