Biomedical Scinece and Research Journals | Parkinson’s Disease and Software: The Applicability Challenge

Image
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative movement disease affecting over 5 million people worldwide. However, there is currently no definitive test for PD by nonspecialist clinicians, especially in the early disease stages where the symptoms may be subtle and poorly characterized. Subsequently, the lack of definitive test for early PD results in a high misdiagnosis rate (up to 25% by non-specialists) and people can have the disease for many years before being diagnosed and managed. Undoubtedly, there is a need for a more accurate, objective means of early detection, ideally one which can be used by individuals in their home setting.  In addition, objective measurements of motor signs are of vital importance for monitoring and developing disease modifying therapies, particularly for the early stages of the disease when potential neuroprotective treatments could stop neurodegeneration.Digital technologies for objectively quantifying PD motor sign do exist a...

Biomedical Scinece and Research Journals | Pore-Forming M2 Domains of CHRNA4 and CHRNB2 Mutations In Autosomal Dominant Nocturnal Frontal Lobe Epilepsy (ADNFLE) Phenotype

Image
Autosomal Dominant Nocturnal Frontal Lobe Epilepsy (ADNFLE) is an uncommon form of epilepsy which causes partial seizures that usually occur at night and almost exclusively during sleep which are characterized by brief tonic or hyperkinetic motor activity without alteration in consciousness. There is some specific cholinergic receptor, nicotinic genes which their mutations can cause ADNFLE like CHRNA2, CHRNA4 and CHRNB2. In this study we have reviewed the effects of Pore-forming M2 domains of CHRNA4 and CHRNB2 genes in occurrence of ADNFLE. Autosomal Dominant Nocturnal Frontal Lobe Epilepsy (ADNFLE) is an uncommon form of epilepsy which its seizure characteristics tend to occur in clusters - brief motor episodes with hyperkinetic and dystonic features or tonic manifestations. ADNFLE as a focal epilepsy syndrome is described with a single gene inheritance pattern. Its onset ranges from infancy to adulthood although late childhood – about seven to twelve years of age – is the mai...

Biomedical Scinece and Research Journals | Family Needs of Critically Ill Patients in Central Jordan: A Family Perspective

Image
Admission to critical care is considered stressful and sometimes traumatic for both patients and their family members. Peoples’ ability to cope with the emotional and psychological aspects of such admission is confronting. Such an experience affects family’s stability and compromise their ability to interact and support their ill relative and subsequently affects treatment’ responses. It is well established in the literature that family members can play several crucial roles in the critically ill patient’s plan of care. Among the roles assuming decision-making on behalf of the patient, especially when this patient is physically or psychologically compromised by a serious illness and providing social support.  The family context represents the most important support system that positively influences patient’s outcomes. When the family responses to stressors are overwhelming, the result may be inability of the family to provide patient support hence affecting patients’ recovery...

Biomedical Scinece and Research Journals | Spatial and Visual Reasoning in Biomedical Education: The Possible Contributions of Anatomical Learning

Image
Spatial visualization ability refers to the human cognitive ability to form, retrieve and manipulate mental models of spatial nature. Examples of validated tests that measure spatial ability and non-verbal reasoning ability (visual reasoning) are: Guay’s visualization of views test, adapted version, mental rotations test, and Raven’s advanced progressive matrices test, short form. There is currently information in the literature about how entry-level spatial and visual reasoning abilities may predict anatomy performance or may be enhanced with progression through the anatomy content in the medical curricula. It has been suggested that medical students possess higher spatial ability than science students, and show greater improvement in spatial ability scores than science students after learning gross anatomy.  Gross anatomy is a discipline that requires the ability to visualize multiple cadaveric planes and allows the training of topographic orientation. This type...

Biomedical Scinece and Research Journals | Photodynamic Therapy for the Treatment of Oral HPV Lesion in a Patient with Oral Lichen Planus. A Case Report

Image
Human papilloma viruses (HPVs) are a group of double-stranded DNA, that cause different type of lesions, also on oral cavity. Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic inflammatory mucocutaneous disease affecting the oral cavity and skin. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment used in all fields of medicine, based on the interaction between a photosensitizer, the appropriate wavelength, and oxygen. The reaction generates ROS in cells that take up the photosensitizer, causing cell death by necrosis or apoptosis. Different parameters are described in the literature for PDT.  We would like to report a case of a patient with diagnosis of Oral lichen planus that developed, and HPV lesion treated with a particular type of PDT. I have not found other cases of Photodynamic Therapy for the treatment of oral HPV lesions, in the scientific literatureHuman papilloma viruses (HPVs) are a group of double-stranded DNA. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection is considered the most common ...

Biomedical Scinece and Research Journals | Antibiotic-Receptor Molecular Interactions

Image
The antibiotic (penicillin G) and receptor Escherichia Coli (e-coli) have been gotten from Protein Data Bank (pdb). Molecular interactions between these molecules are achieved through calculations of potential energy surface (PES) and molecular dynamics. These calculations are related to the structure of the molecules. Single point calculations of penicillin G interacting with e-coli molecules are carried out to obtain potential wells, for knowing whether there is attraction or repulsion between them. When calculating and graphing the minimum energies, we can realize that there is physisorption between these molecules.  Furthermore, molecular dynamics of one system of 8 molecules of penicillin G with 1 molecule of e-coli, and another of 8 molecules of e-coli with 1 of penicillin G are accomplished. A histogram is made with the distances obtained from centroids of each molecule, and the radial distribution is calculated to obtain dispersion of the molecules ac...

Biomedical Scinece and Research Journals | Airflow In Paranasal Sinuses

Image
The function of paranasal sinuses has been investigated by considering a time-dependent gauge-pressure expression for airflow in the nose. Depending on the type of inhalation pattern by the same individual, it is shown that air flowing through the nasal cavity determines a more or less effective translation of the molecules of air coming from the paranasal sinuses. A functional manometric survey of the middle meatus was carried out on a homogeneous group of 50 Caucasian individuals. The nose & sinus manometer MG1 performed the manometry.  This device allowed us to record two pressure peak values in two different close nose-sinus places at the same time: the maxillary ostium (point 2) and a nasal point close to the maxillary ostium (point 1). A steel probe with two endings was built on for this specific purpose. We called “differential pressure” the algebraically difference between these two values. Venturi effect has been considered as a modulator of nose and...

Biomedical Scinece and Research Journals | Cyberbullying in Early Adolescence: Is There a Difference Between Urban and Rural Environment?

Image
According to the definition of the World Health Organization, violence is “intentional use of physical force and power by threat or action towards oneself, to another person, or to a group of people or the whole community, which results in injury, death, psychological consequences, underdevelopment or deprivation”. Similarly, legislation in Croatia regulated the relationship to domestic violence, and according to the Law on Protection against Domestic Violence, violence is defined as “any form of physical, mental, sexual or economic violence”. Even though violence may seem like a chaotic process, it always has four basic elements: power disproportion, intent of hurting, threats of further aggression, and terribleness that arises as a result of systematic violence used to intimidate other and maintain domination. Cyber peer bullying is considered as any communication activity of a group or individual via internet, video or mobile phones that serves to the cause of humiliation, tea...

Biomedical Scinece and Research Journals | Fishing Agricultural Lakes in Zauralia Russia Becomes Progressive

Image
Fisheries melioration of lakes in Western Siberia has significant development experience. In the modern period, commercial lakes of fish in the Chelyabinsk, Kurgan, Tyumen, Omsk, and Novosibirsk regions on a number of exploited lakes carry out indigenous and current reclamations that contribute to the increase in biological production of water bodies and an increase in commercial fish catch per 1 ha of water area compared to the traditional fishery extensive fish farming technologies. The main thing is that business leaders and leading experts are convinced tangible benefits of land reclamation used and show increased interest and creativity in the development and implementation of scientific recommendations. In particular, 2008, specialists of the SRO - Sladkovsky commodity fish farm began in 2008 to restore and modernize the farm, which worked in the 70-80s as part of the Sibrybproma of the Tyumen Region. And literally from “zero” they achieved tangible results, since the ent...

Biomedical Scinece and Research Journals | Bell’s Palsy: A Narrative Account of the Illness, and A Short Presentation of the Disease

Image
Bell’s palsy [BP] is a rather common ailment, covered by an extensive literature, in the past decades imbued with the evidencebased medicine, with exclusive reference to diseases. The current revival of narrative medicine encourages a reconsideration of the illnesses. Our aim is to join and reconcile the two approaches. Hemifacial paresis had been observed and described since the antiquity but is currently named after Sir Charles Bell (1774– 1842) because he was the first to interpret it on solid neuroanatomical grounds. He published the narrative account of the illness in a letter from one of his correspondents and might have suffered it himself.  What generally happens is that BP is the prima facie (literally) diagnosis for hemifacial, or peripheral seventh cranial nerve, paralysis On the morning of January 3, I first noticed a difficulty with the mouth wash, after tooth brushing, with the liquid drooling out of the mouth. A look at the mirror revealed that the left half ...

Biomedical Scinece and Research Journals ! Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Skin and Ocular Surface Disease: An Interdisciplinary Review

Image
Mitochondria are subcellular organelles that are the power-house of the cell. However, we now see that they play an ever-growing role in health, disease and aging of the skin. Not only does thee mitochondria produce the most reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the cell, but it affects major inflammatory and dysplastic processes. We have reviewed the literature of mitochondrial dysfunction and ocular surface disease. We have presented syndromes and non-syndromic conditions where mitochondrial dysfunction affects ocular surface health and dry eye, dry keratoconjunctivitis. Mitochondria are sub-cellular organelles with DNA. Mitochondrial DNA (mt DNA) is normally present at thousands of copies per cell and is packaged into several hundred higher-order structures termed nucleoids and makes only 13 proteins, a noncoding regulatory D-Loop, 2rRNA and 22 tRNAs, including genes for 13 oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) polypeptides, 22 tRNAs and two ribosomal RNAs, while some of the OX...

Biomedical Scinece and Research Journals ! Community Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation in Bangladesh

Image
Community Physiotherapy is totally a new concept and less pursued specialization in physiotherapy (Rajan, 2013). This might be due to various reasons; to name a few, the lack of interest among physiotherapist to work in the communities, paucity of information on community-based physiotherapy, complex methods required to measure a community and reduced awareness about community health problems among physiotherapists (Rajan, 2012). Bangladesh is a developing country with a huge population, in that case community-based physiotherapy can be a perceived as an important cog in the wheel of the healthcare system. Although, in Bangladesh, Graduate physiotherapists have lack of interest in community based of physiotherapy due to lack of information about it. Here center-based physiotherapy is very popular and maximum physiotherapists want to settle in urban areas due to a good or comfort life with a good income. Center based physiotherapy depends on equipment, electricity, a lot of spac...

Biomed Grid-Journal of Biomedical; Reentry and Rotors : u ... - Reddit

Image
Two interesting papers [ 1 , 2 ] appeared recently discussing the important question of a rotor (spiral) induced by a reentry mechanism and its influence on heart failures. One of the main malfunctions of the heart is tachycardia [ 3 , 4 ], rapid heartbeat, either in the atria termed AT or in the ventricles (VT). Tachycardia can lead to fibrillation [ 5 ]. (AF or VF respectively), i.e. rather chaotic heart-waves. It is known that patients suffering from fibrosis are more prone to contract such fibrillary condition, which can lead even to sudden cardiac death (SCD). These activities are thought by most authors to be sustained by a small number of self-organized, rapidly spinning electrical rotors [ 6 ]. The importance of locating the rotor centers for ablation purposes in AF patients was shown [ 7 ] to be of real benefit in this treatment. The rotor itself can be due to a “reentry” [ 8 ], i.e. a mechanism where an action potential (AP) pulse is repeatedly oscillating ...

Biomedical Science & Research Journals | Ethiopian Community Attitude Towards the O-Words (Overweight and Obesity); As A Symbol Of Wealth, Health, Beauty, Comfort, Honesty, Dignity, Respect And Confidence Which Should Be A Turning Point For Their Detrimental Effects

Image
Body mass index (BMI) is a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used to classify overweight and obesity. It is defined as a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of his/her height in meters (kg/m 2 ). The WHO definition for a BMI greater than or equal to 25 is overweight and a BMI greater than or equal to 30 is obesity. BMI provides the most useful population-level measure of overweight and obesity as it is the same for both sexes and for all ages of adults. Majority of the Ethiopian community were Christians and Muslims who are practicing regular fasting guidelines. Culturally the community doesn’t follow regular feeding habits rather give priority for activities. Majority of Ethiopians especially living in rural part of the country eat only twice daily (morning and night). Due to infrastructural limits in the country at large, all most all of the community engaged in strenuous activity forcefully in their daily activity and covering more kilometres o...

Biomedical Science & Research Journals | The Potential Risk of Carbon Dioxide Gas in Closed Areas in Faculty Places - Study Case

Image
Carbon dioxide gas is the main greenhouse which is coming from different sources like combustion of organic matter, fossil fuel and deforestation, ocean release etc. In addition, human being exhales CO 2 during his respiration and the average human exhales about 2.3pounds of carbon dioxide on an average day. The study was conducted in public faculty place where many students who used to come to the college in order to have their lessons in different majors. Therefore, there are sitting in different classrooms, library and canteen or roaming and walking between corridors. Three parameters were measured, and they are temperature and humidity and Concentration of Carbon dioxide in both units as % & ppm. The target of study was to correlate between concentration of CO 2 and the presence of students at different locations with various times. Thus, the classrooms and crowed areas with human being started to become hotter and hotter with passing time and especially with less ven...

Biomedical Science & Research Journals | Evaluation of the Functional Indicator Maturity of Newborns

Image
Unlike the anthropometric indicators of newborns, the values of the functional maturity indexes on the Apgar scale in healthy children do not have an established close relationship with the material situation of the family, the indicators are not given much importance. The aim of the work was to clarify the influence of various biological factors, including geographical latitude and nationality, on head growth and functional development of newborns. It was found that the indicator of functional maturity of newborns, assessed by different groups of subjects, is a sensitive indicator of the quality of life of the family and the level of adaptation of the developing fetus to these conditions of life. In the case of full-term newborns with a head circumference exceeding 34cm and a body length exceeding 49cm, the delay in the rate of head growth and functional maturity is formed as a result of their decrease in the last month of pregnancy in the presence of diseases and b...

Biomedical Science & Research Journals | How to Study the History of Philosophy of Science?

Image
Undoubtedly, this paper impressed me deeply. How to study the history of philosophy of science? Previous researchers either took philosophers of science as clues to introduce in detail the ideas and methods of philosophers of Science in different periods, or take a concept of philosophy of science, such as the structure of scientific theory, the evolution of the scientific theory, as a clue, to elaborate the understanding of this concept and related theories of different schools of philosophy of science. There are many studies around the above clues, some of which are also very good. The author of this paper, however, puts forward a new clue to study the history of philosophy of science, that is, to raise and solve the problems of philosophy of science.  The development of the philosophy of science, from the logical path to the historical path, and to the path of the combination of logic and history, produced many different styles of schools and theories of the philosophy of ...

Biomedical Science & Research Journals | Agricultural Management Greatly Affects the Beneficial Entomofauna of the Olive Groves

Image
In the course of the last decades there has been a remarkable evolution in the agricultural practices carried out in olive growing, from a conventional management (CM), based on the systematic application of pesticides and lacking vegetal cover, to the Integrated pest Management (IPM), in which the application of pesticides is limited, being applied according to more rational criteria. In addition, an herbaceous vegetation cover is maintained in the olive grove, in order to limit soil erosion. Although they are of a minority nature, a lower proportion of olive groves are subject to Ecological Management (EM), in which pesticides are eliminated completely and the herbaceous vegetation cover is maintained, being only subject to scarce tillage operations. Here, the control of pests is exercised exclusively by beneficial fauna. The main objective of this study is to determine the impact of each of these agricultural management methods on b...
